Christmas Around the House

Sharing my Christmas decorations around the house is truly one of my favorite posts of the whole year! It's our first Christmas in the new house so it was extra fun to decorate. We decided not to get a real tree because of my foot surgery over Thanksgiving. It would have been too much and I was just fine putting our old faux tree in this corner of the dining room. It actually worked out great because I was able to squish it up against the wall and it took up a lot less space in the room without having to move any furniture!

I love the addition of the burlap Merry Christmas ribbon this year! And this view with the fireplace mantle in the background is one of my favorites.

I love how our table setting turned out for Christmas Eve dinner.

A close up of the mantle- I used a fresh garland and it really made all the difference!

These personalized holiday napkins from Tiny Prints and peppermint oreo cheesecake from Trader Joes were a hit!

I even added a little Christmas flair to the bathroom- a perfect plaid ribbon on a blue and white ginger jar and of course the best holiday candle out there!

My holiday picture with Mr. Kitty!

Just a few of my holiday entertaining essentials.. plaid napkins, champagne candle, custom gift tags, holly tablecloth, and a Happy Holidays (similar) tray!

This chalkboard advent calendar was so fun to personalize!

I hope you enjoyed our holiday home tour! Wishing all my lovely readers a very merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year! XO

DIY Coffee Sugar Scrub

My coworkers and I always exchange a little gift each holiday season. This year instead of the usual candy or sweet treat, I thought I would mix it up and make a sugar scrub. When I found the cutest little jars and twine in the Target dollar spot I knew they would be a hit!

I've seen a lot of recipes around but none of them were portioned correctly for making a large batch so I loosely came up with this:

Ingredients
1 Cup Sugar
1 Cup Ground Coffee
1/2 Cup Coconut Oil
1/2 Tablespoon Cinnamon

Directions
1. Melt coconut oil and allow it to cool (don't let it become solid).
2. Mix all of the ingredients together.
3. Put the mixture in mason jars!

I made three batches which filled about 18 jars and it took me about 1 hour in total. The longest part was waiting for the coconut oil to cool. I loved that it was an inexpensive and easy gift!

Our 2015 Christmas Card

Introducing our 2015 Christmas card!

This year I was going for a classic, elegant look that incorporated our new home in the picture. I went with Tiny Prints again because of their variety of options as well as the high quality I have always received (remember last year's card?!- it was a hit!)

Christmas card

I am in LOVE with the red foil calligraphy design; as well as the custom backer and matching liner. I also used an embosser for our return address and I think it gives it that extra special touch.

The black polka dot envelope liner matches the back of the card

I went with the 'Charming Curls' embosser from Tiny Prints because it had a timeless look and we will be able to use it for many years to come.

I choose the red foil design to go along with my favorite pair of red Kate Spade heels!

Last year I did a Holiday Card swap with a few of you and it was so much fun! If you would like to swap cards this year please shoot me an email (missandrealee {at} gmail {dot} com).

DIY Banana Leaf Lampshade

I've admired the banana leaf print on interior design blogs for quite some time now but I could never figure out how to incorporate it into our space.
Image via
I love the pattern because it reminds me of Hawaii! But it also adds a bit of fun to a space. I already had the lamp base and it was in desperate need for a new shade so it worked out perfectly.

lamshade diy

You will need:

-A self adhesive lampshade, currently $5 at Hobby Lobby
-Banana Leaf fabric (or any fabric of your choosing!) I found mine on Etsy for just $3
-Hot glue/gun
-Scissors

I followed the directions on the lampshade, but basically you follow the pattern (below). The shade itself has adhesive so it is easy to stick on. I added an inch extra of fabric all the way around the pattern so I could fold it under and glue it.  That's it!

And the end result:

I'm loving how simple and easy this project was!

Weekending

Happy Monday! I hope your weekend was lovely.

Saturday morning we were invited to a private screening of the new James Bond movie! It was fantastic. Then we spent Saturday afternoon taking photos for our Christmas card and I can't wait to show you the results! (hint: we loved last year's card so much that we are using Tiny Prints again!)

I found a matching puffer vest for Mr. Kitty at Target (only $3!) so of course I had to have it. Doesn't he look handsome?!

Speaking of Target, I'm obsessed with the Sugar Paper line of wrapping goodies that they currently have. So many cute options!

We also finally put up our Lucite rods and curtains in the family room. It was drizzly all day on Sunday, making it the perfect day to watch movies and test out our new dark room.

I am planning on doing a full post on the rods/curtains once I steam and hem them, so stay tuned!

The chilly temps have arrived in these parts (well 60 degrees for this California girl is quite chilly!) and I wanted to share a recent outfit favorite.

This sweater is from JCrew a few seasons ago (a current version at the factory store) but I love how warm and cozy it is! The heathered look is perfect for a casual weekend outfit.

Did you do anything fun this weekend??! Do share! XO

Halloween Treat Bags

Since we moved into our cute little neighborhood I've been SO excited for the holidays! First up is Halloween and because my neighbors did it for me growing up, I thought I would make little treat bags for the kids on our block!

Halloween Treat Bags

I found the cutest 'trick or treat' pintables for the tags from Oh So Beautiful Paper and the gingham ribbon is from Hobby Lobby.

I included a bunch of inexpensive Halloween themed goodies from Target:
-Pencils
-Notepad
-Stencils
-Puzzle
-Slap bracelet
-Stickers
-Spider rings
-Slime
-Yo-yo

I love how they turned out! I even made a few extra without any candy so we could participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project. As someone who has a nut allergy, I think it's great that kids with allergies can still participate in the Halloween fun!

Have a happy and safe Halloween!!

Lands End Bucket Bag

I recently picked up this red bucket bag from Lands End and it is LOVE. Seriously, the leather is so buttery soft and I'm a total sucker for tassels. I've been trying to figure out how I can wear it as often as possible.

Last weekend I wore it while running errands around town and I received so many compliments! It's extremely versatile as I've also worn it to work several times and I hope to share that outfit with you next week!

I am very impressed with Land's End quality and they are my top choice when looking for classics. They currently are running a 30% off promo and have a lot of great fall options.

Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Wishlist Wednesday {Fall Edition}

I have quite the growing fall wishlist.. It doesn't help that the temps are still in the 90's here. But a few things that have caught my eye in the last few weeks:
A cute stacked heel bootie is a fall must for me. Loving this color too- it would match perfectly with my Barbour coat.

I'm a huge Devon Baer fan and I have several of her tunics that I wear throughout the cold months. Because they look great at work (tucked in with a belt!) or dressed up with pearls for an event I find myself reaching for them a lot. I love the elbow patch detail that is new this year; now I just need to decide on a color!

This is literally the most perfect holiday plaid skirt that I have ever seen! I've had holiday cards on my mind lately (Tiny Prints has real glitter cards this year! SWOON!) and how cute would this skirt be?! I'm thinking of doing them on our front porch and I can envision a wreath and maybe a little mistletoe!

What's on your wishlist?!

#DerbyThirty

Next year I turn the big 3-0! Not exactly sure how I feel about entering a new decade, but regardless I've decided that I'm going to have a Kentucky Derby Party to celebrate- complete with a hat contest and a mint julep bar!

I know May 7 is really far away but I am just so excited I can't help myself! I've actually already found my dress and I'm starting to think of some party d├ęcor ideas too. I'm loving this bar cart and I think I will do something similar.

I am planning on going with a Kate Spade-esq theme- think black and white stripes, pops of pink/red and sterling silver everywhere.

Counting down the days!

Updates Around the House

In the past few weeks since returning from Hawaii I've been go-go-go with projects around the house. It's like suddenly something clicked and I've had a vision of how I wanted things to look when before I was unsure.

My MIL had this beautiful tobacco leaf vase in one of their Maui condos and on our recent trip the stars aligned and I was able to bring it home in my carry-on bag. I was a wreck going through security with it, but I am so glad it made it home to California safely.

I also repainted the book shelf you see behind the vase. It was my first experience with chalk paint, and sadly I think it will be my last. I think I am just a fan of tried and true latex paint.

Continuing with the blue theme, I saw one of my favorite bloggers, A Mrs Among Magnolias, posted a picture of these fun buffalo check valences and I knew they would be perfect in our laundry room.

I've also decided that this holiday season I am going to focus on improving our outdoor seasonal decorations. Since we lived in a condo before we basically have zero in that department and our new neighborhood really goes all-out and I need to put our resources there. I'm thinking that buying Christmas lights for the house will be a doozy so I'm trying to be mindful of that.

However, I did find the cutest little boxwood wreath for our kitchen nook built-in!

Which also happens to match our larger one which currently resides on the mantle. More importantly though, I found the cutest striped taper candle which brings the perfect modern mix to the space.

I have a few more updates in the works and I can't wait to share those with you all soon!

XOXO

Five on Friday

Happy Friday!

1. I am so ready for fall. These near 100 degree days need to see themselves out! This weekend I am planning on giving our front porch a little fall flair. I'm thinking some mums for the steps and a DIY magnolia wreath on the front door. One night this past week I gave my grandma's old cement bench a new coat of paint (which matches the trim of the house) and I couldn't be more pleased with outcome! It really fills in the space nicely.

2. I am also very ready to break out some chunky sweaters and a more neutral color palate.

fall cashmere

3. I feel like Target knows me. I stumbled upon these paper plates of blue and white plates and somehow they all ended up in my cart, such is life I guess. Swooning.

4. I finally picked up the Lucite curtain rods I was talking about in this post. I had them cut at our local TAP Plasitics and I am excited to eventually get curtains and hang them up! Yay for no more glare on the TV during my weekend Netflix binges.

5. Our house has two built-ins, one in the kitchen nook and one in the dining room. I am dying to wall paper the inside of the one in the dining room. I am obsessed with this wallpaper and I think it would look fab in the space:

Extra bonus is that it is easily removable so it won't damage the built-in at all.

Wishing you all a very lovely weekend!!!! XO

Maui Outfits

We've been home from Maui for a little over a week now (and fully recovered from the need to have a post-vacation vacation) so I thought I would share a few favorite photos from our trip.

maui
love those beachy blues!

While we were there, one of my main objectives was to take frame-worthy photos of CWF and I on the beach. We have very few photos of us together (with the exception of wedding photos, but who wants a whole house full of wedding photos?!) so it was important to me to get a some good ones. Before the trip I purchased a tripod and remote to make it all happen. My step-dad was also very kind to teach me how to make my own flower crown with flowers common to Hawaii.

My flower crown in all its glory! I also attached a few white hibiscus stems to a bobby pin and placed them behind my ear for another look. I ended up wearing it with this dress:

lilly pulitzer dusk dress
Lilly Pulitzer 'Dusk' dress
At the beginning of our trip there was several hurricanes nearby making the waves especially big. We enjoyed watching all of the surfers.

lilly pulitzer dress maui
Lilly Pulitzer dress, old (Same dress in navy blue)
Pretty much every day I made myself a variation of a pina colada and enjoyed it watching the waves from the lanai. My very loose recipe if you are feeling in the island mood:

In the blender place:
- four or five ice cubes
-1 banana
-1/3 of a pineapple
- 3 tsp coconut cream
- splash of soy milk
- 1 shot of rum
 Blend and enjoy!

Right outside my in-law's condo is a reef where a lot of turtles hang out. CWF snapped this outfit picture with the cutest photo-bomber in the back!
Love the Lilly Buttercup shorts!
If you hangout near the rockwall long enough you can also spot black crabs scurrying about. The sunsets are killer down there too.

This trip was much more relaxed than our previous trips as we mostly went to the beach, but it was just what we needed! I plan to put together a Maui Recommendations post soon, so keep an eye out!

Aloha from Maui

Aloha! I hope everyone had a nice labor day weekend! We've been relaxing and soaking up the sun over in Maui and it has been much needed.

Seriously, I can't get enough of those Hawaiian sunsets. I'll be back soon with a fun 'what to do on Maui' guide and a recap of a few of my favorite outfits.. Now, back to relaxing with my hubby!
